WTC Related Cancers and Illnesses

The Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is intended for individuals who suffered a “physical injury to the body” and who also qualify under the other eligibility requirements based on presence at the specified site(s) and within the effective time period. At this time, the VCF does not offer compensation for psychological or PTSD, although there are options for treatment available through the WTC Health program. For information about whether you may be eligible for treatment for emotional or mental harms by the WTC Health Program, you can contact the WTC Health program directly, or we would be glad to discuss the issue with you.
Below is a list of presumptively covered conditions based on determinations made by the WTC Health Program. Although these are generally the only injuries or conditions that the VCF will provide compensation for, in rare circumstances, individuals with other physical conditions may also be eligible for an award. In addition, this list has been modified twice to add different cancers since the VCF reopened in 2011.

Cancers & Illnesses

Prostate Cancer

Mesothelioma
The greatest future risk of mesothelioma would appear to exist among first responders who were covered by the cloud of dust on 11 September 2001 as well as in other workers employed directly at Ground Zero and workers employed in cleaning asbestos-laden dust from contaminated buildings. Generally, mesothelioma has a latency period in the body of at least 11 years from exposure and it may take as long as 20 to 50 years to become symptomatic.
